Quizlet

What is it?

Quizlet is an online revision tool that allows the user to create or use a set of cards that can be used in various ways for revising information.

On the website, there are currently millions of pre-created study sets that users can access covering thousands of different subjects. These study sets can be used in a variety of ways including:

  • Topic Revision

  • In class collaboriation

  • Creating notes

This ICT tool currently has 8 revision styles available to the user, being split between interactive study methods in the 'play' section and the more individualised study methods in the 'study' section. Examples of these can be seen in the images below.

Overview of Benefits

Various Review Types

On the Quizlet platform, there are various types of revision methods available to the user. This can allow the user to have a choice in their revision method; whilst also giving them the chance to practice various recognition methods, without having to only repeat one method and possibly lose interest. Teachers can use these different revision types to scaffold their students learning to meet their cognitive and functional needs in the classroom.

Accessibility across devices

Quizlet is a cross-platform application, which allows the user to access their revision sets from anywhere via their computer or mobile device. This makes the tool extremely accessible, as most people already carry a mobile device and allows them to revise at any time that suits them.

(Note: Some devices may experience installation issues if external device protection software’s interfered.)

Abundance of resources

The application offers the user the option to search and use both pre-created study sets and study plans covering almost any topic a user may need in their learning. This gives the user access to many more options for revision style and topic when choosing how to implement and/or access this study tool.

Overview of Weaknesses

Information Correctness

On potential issue a user may encounter when using pre-created study sets, is that they can at times be incorrect. This issue occurs due to these sets being created by other people, which allows for human error or lack of understanding. Given this, when choosing a study set, users are recommended to preview the card sets and check if they are valid before implementing them in use.

Cost of Use

When using this application, I found there to be a great variety of features for both students and teachers to use both individually and collaboratively in their educational work. However, for students a lot of these features were locked with the premium account; whilst teacher have to pay a monthly subscription to be using it in collaboration with their student's associated accounts. This took away a lot of strengths that it originally offered for the teacher.

Additional Purchases

When using this application, it is possible to set a price for your study materials to be sold at. Given this, a lot of the higher quality and more correct study guides and study sets are not accessible for users without them purchasing individual sets. This leaves users that are unwilling to pay for these additional purchases with possibly having to use less educationally correct materials.

Links to Learning Theories

Under the SAMR model, Quizlet could be described as a transformation and modification tool when integrating ICT into learning. This is due to it taking the simple idea of making flashcards and moving it online to a platform where anyone with a device can access them on the go, as well as use other people collection of study cards. This additions to the basic flashcard structure of revising, make it easier for students to access their learning tools from any location and at any time; whilst also giving the teacher the opportunity to check the validity of the tools that the students are using.

Given that it is a revision tool, that relies on students practising their knowledge to answer basic questions like definitions, this tool would encompass the ‘understanding’ and ‘knowledge' sections of blooms taxonomy. This shows teachers that this tool should be limited to use in revision purposes and not used for developing students application of content, as it only engages the lower levels of student thinking and does not allow them to develop their comprehension as well as higher-level thinking skills.

How to use it in the classroom

Explanation of Use in the Classroom

As a HaSS teacher, when teaching my students about 'the types of work' and 'why we work', it is important for them to under the concept definitions, as they are the groundwork for all the content within these topics. Given this, I can use Quizlet to test their understanding and application of the concepts, through having each student do the following:

  1. Create a set of revision cards consisting of at least 10 cards including at least 6 definitions from a list given to the students covering key definitions. For these questions, students will be asked to put their cards in their own words and provide examples.

  2. Share their card sets with their class via a blog on their learning management system and email a link to the teacher.

  3. Complete at least two classmate cards sets and screenshot the completion screen, then post the screenshots in their previous blog post.

Through using Quizlet in this process, it allows students to both create and communicate their understanding of key concepts in their learning in a collaborative and assessable fashion. As well as this, through the gamification that Quizlet offers, more students are willing to participate and complete the task given to try and beat their friend's creations. To top this off, the teacher can check the student's cards that they created and the sets that they complete via their blog posts; then use the information to assess student understanding and readiness for moving forward in the topics.
